Wana Brands Named Top Corporate Social Responsibility Company in Denver Business Journal’s 2021 Small Business Awards

Broad-based community support through strategic investments, non-profit partners, volunteering and reducing environmental impact cited as catalyst for recognition   

BOULDER, Colo. (March 18, 2021) – Wana Brands has been named the winner of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Award by the Denver Business Journal as part of the publication’s annual Small Business Awards for 2021. The recognition comes following a sea change of social, business and economic upheaval experienced due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020.

“Of all of the accomplishments we have achieved during the past 12 months, being honored for our efforts in the communities we serve is the most meaningful recognition we could receive,” said Nancy Whiteman, CEO of Wana Brands. “Wana’s Corporate Social Responsibility is built on our commitment to conduct business in an ethical and transparent manner and intended to reflect our tagline of ‘Enhance Your Life.’ We believe that Wana can play a meaningful role in improving the lives of the people in the communities we serve.”

Although faced with a challenging business environment due to the ongoing pandemic last year, Wana Brands was still able to manage its planned out-of-state expansions, launching in five new markets in 2020 including Canada when no one from the organization could travel outside the country. While scaling back on CSR employee engagement efforts and local in-person events, Wana Brands made larger commitments to social equity and diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts, both financially and through programs such as the website, which chronicles the company’s ongoing DEI efforts while serving as a resource for other businesses.

The Denver Business Journal’s Annual Small Business Awards honors excellence and resilience among small businesses, highlighting their contributions to metro Denver’s community. In addition to recognizing that small businesses are the foundation of the economy, the 2021 honorees were cited for their ability to manage unprecedented pandemic-fueled challenges. Nominee companies must be locally owned, for-profit firms with 100 employees or less at the time of their nomination.

Wana Brands has made a significant commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility, including the creation of a full-time position for a Corporate Social Responsibility Director, tasked with development of the company’s CSR program. In addition, the company encourages employees to volunteer through programs organized internally and externally. The company provides Volunteer Time Off (VTO) 16 hours annually and employees can accrue points through volunteering and use those points to “purchase” swag and paid time off (PTO). Company group volunteer projects benefit Sister Carmen, Safehouse Progressive Alliance for Nonviolence, Butterfly Pavilion, Attention Homes, Humane Society of Boulder Valley, Boulder County Parks and Open Space, Bridgehouse, and Community Food Share.  Finally, the brand supports larger industry efforts combating inequality through partnerships with the Last Prisoner Project, Black CannaBusiness Magazine, Oregon’s NuLeaf Project and the company’s own Cannabis For Justice initiative.

Honorees will be highlighted in the Denver Business Journal’s 2021 Small Business Awards special section published in Denver Business Journal’s May 14 edition and honored at the Small Business Awards celebratory awards program on Thursday, May 20.
