Wana Brands Introduces All-Organic Sweeteners in Maryland

North America’s No. 1 cannabis-infused edibles brand is vegan, all-natural and now free of high fructose corn syrup

BALTIMORE (November 3, 2021) – Crafting healthy and inclusive products has long served as a guiding principle for Wana Brands, North America’s No. 1 infused edibles producer. Now, Wana Brands builds on that foundation of product responsibility by replacing high-fructose corn syrup with organic and more sustainable sweeteners in its Maryland product line. The pivot aligns with Wana’s commitment to human and environmental health. 

“We wanted to find an alternative to high-fructose corn syrup that didn’t compromise on taste. So we invested in researching formulations with a wide range of potential sweeteners until we arrived upon this outstanding blend of organic sugar and tapioca syrup,” said Nancy Whiteman, CEO, Wana Brands. “The new formula requires a larger investment from Wana. However, we will not pass the additional cost along to our customers who deserve and expect only superior ingredients in all Wana products.”

Adjusting established product formulations is rarely easy, particularly when ingredients that contribute profoundly to flavor and texture–such as sweeteners–are modified. It was important that the revised Wana recipe ingredients improved the overall quality. 

When Wana began researching alternatives, the company decided that USDA-certified organic sugar should be one part of the new formulation; because organic agricultural products cannot be treated with pesticides and herbicides, organic sugar poses less of a threat to the environment as well as human health. After significant research and development, Wana also incorporated tapioca syrup, which is derived from the roots of the South American cassava plant, into the new sweetener blend. Now, each Wana cannabis gummie contains just three grams of sugar, less than is typically found in a serving of salad dressing.

“When we established Wana Brands more than a decade ago, our infused-edible products quickly became a go-to choice for consumers looking for a premium experience,” Whiteman said. “The elimination of high-fructose corn syrup in our line of Maryland infused-edible products now makes Wana even more compelling for health-conscious consumers.
